Abstract
There has been recent interest in MIMO radarswhich employ sub-arrays at the transmitter. This architectureallows a trade-off between the coherent beamforming gain of aphased array antenna and the transmit beampattern diversityoffered by a MIMO radar with full transmit diversity, whilemaintaining a relatively simple implementation in the transmithardware. In this work we study the maximum likelihood (ML)receiver for a transmit sub-arrayed MIMO radar, for estimatingthe direction of arrival of multiple targets. We develop thelikelihood function for an orthogonal sub-arrayed MIMO radarfor receiver architectures with and without a matched-filterbank. The maximisation of these likelihood functions form multidimensionaloptimisation problems which can be solved using avariety of sub-optimal numerical algorithms.
